Digital Storage Units

There are two systems for digital storage units:

  • Decimal (SI): Based on powers of 10
    • 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,000 bytes
    • 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,000,000 bytes
    • 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,000,000,000 bytes
  • Binary (IEC): Based on powers of 2
    • 1 Kibibyte (KiB) = 1,024 bytes
    • 1 Mebibyte (MiB) = 1,048,576 bytes
    • 1 Gibibyte (GiB) = 1,073,741,824 bytes

How to Use This Unit Converter

Our unit converter helps you convert between different units of measurement across various categories. Here's how to use it:

  1. Select a category (length, area, volume, etc.) using the category buttons.
  2. Enter the value you want to convert.
  3. Choose the source unit from the "From" dropdown menu.
  4. Choose the target unit from the "To" dropdown menu.
  5. View the converted result and the conversion formula.
  6. Optionally, save the conversion to your recent list for future reference.

You can also swap the source and target units by clicking the swap button between the dropdowns.

Measurement Systems

The world primarily uses two measurement systems:

Metric System (SI)

The International System of Units (SI) is used by most countries worldwide. It's based on powers of 10, making conversions simple.

  • Length: meter (m)
  • Mass: kilogram (kg)
  • Volume: liter (L) or cubic meter (m³)
  • Temperature: Celsius (°C)

Common prefixes include:

  • kilo- (k): 1,000 (10³)
  • centi- (c): 0.01 (10⁻²)
  • milli- (m): 0.001 (10⁻³)
  • micro- (μ): 0.000001 (10⁻⁶)

Imperial/US Customary System

Used primarily in the United States and, to some extent, in the United Kingdom. It has historical origins and less consistent conversion factors.

  • Length: inch (in), foot (ft), yard (yd), mile (mi)
  • Weight: ounce (oz), pound (lb), stone (st)
  • Volume: fluid ounce (fl oz), cup, pint (pt), quart (qt), gallon (gal)
  • Temperature: Fahrenheit (°F)

Conversions often involve fractions or irregular numbers (e.g., 12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard).

Temperature Conversion

Temperature conversions use formulas rather than simple multiplication factors:

Celsius to Fahrenheit

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

Example: 20°C to °F

(20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F

Fahrenheit to Celsius

°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9

Example: 68°F to °C

(68 - 32) × 5/9 = 20°C

Celsius to Kelvin

K = °C + 273.15

Example: 20°C to K

20 + 273.15 = 293.15K
